Crump Humanism in Medicine Exposition Scholar (CHIMES) Program

The purpose of the UGA Crump Humanism in Medicine Exposition Scholar (CHIMES) Program is to promote writing in pre-med students with a focus on empathy and understanding of patient experience. Previous medical education publications have shown that students who are encouraged to write about their interactions with patients are more likely to show empathy later in practice. The CHIMES program provides opportunities for undergraduate pre-medical students to have long interviews with community individuals who have much to teach them. Ideally, these individuals will have a variety of life experiences, including health challenges and limitations imposed by access or financial issues. This is an amazing opportunity to experience the patient-related side of healthcare.

This Program is overseen by Dr. William Crump, the current Associate Dean of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and a UGA alumni.

CHIMES participants must be UGA pre-med students. They will submit an original, written work in stages to compete for the CHIMES scholarship award and subsequent publication in UGA’s The Classic Journal
